You might have seen on Instagram that we recently went to St. Barths for Michael’s birthday AGAIN. Lucky guy. It was an incredible experience and we had the best time. Last year we stayed on yacht but this year we stayed at Villa Neo with all our best friends. It was so fun. We put together a tennis tournament, did Pilates with Bryony, and hung out by the pool.

One thing we don’t do enough of as adults: celebrate our birthdays. 

Think about it. Our birthdays are a huge accomplishment every year. They’re a great time to reflect on the previous year and set intentions for the year to come. 

And between surviving the year and the work we’re doing to set out for a great new year, we deserve a celebration. That’s why we’re declaring that adult birthday parties should make a big comeback.

Plus, birthday parties are one of the rare opportunities we get to have all of our loved ones in one place. And it’s a day that’s all about YOU. What could be better? 

But we’ll admit, planning a birthday party can be stressful. There’s a lot to consider. Just ask Lauryn about Zaza’s Pineapple Soiree and Eloise Birthday. It takes major work, even when you have help.

Don’t sweat it though, we have you covered with both practical and creative tips for throwing the BEST adult birthday party you’ve ever had. Plus, we’ve got some adult birthday party ideas for themes that are sure to kick off a good time.

How To Throw A Great Birthday Party For Adults

Tip #1: Choose a date.

The first step in any party planning venture is to pick a date. For a birthday party, you’ll want to decide whether or not to have it on your actual birthday. Of course, you’ll also want to consider your guests’ other engagements like, having a birthday party on a Tuesday may not be the move, even if it’s your actual birthday. So choose that date and mark it down on all your calendars/planners.

HOT TIP: choose a date between 2 weeks and 1 month ahead of time to give your party goers plenty of time to plan.

Tip #2: Set a budget.

To know what you want to do, you’ve gotta know what you want to spend to celebrate your birthday. Are you going all out for your bad-ass birthday bash, or keeping it more casual? Your budget may make a difference here.

Tip #3: Decide on a theme.

Is the theme the most important part of your birthday party planning? Maybe not, but it’s definitely up there. Your theme determines the look and the vibe of your party and if you’re a diva like we are, it’s probably also going to determine your outfit. 

Pick a theme that matches how you want to feel and how you want your guests to feel at the party. For theme party ideas, keep scrolling–we’ve got some down below.

Tip #4: Pick your venue.

There are some things you’ll want to consider before you pick your venue: your budget (of course), your theme, how many guests you’ll be inviting, and how long you want your party to be. 

Obviously, you want your venue to match your theme, but you also want it to be comfortable and fun for your guests for as long as you’ll be there. Some solid venues include bars, Airbnbs, VRBOs, hotel party rooms, or your own house.

Tip #5: Create your guest list.

Now it’s time to consider the who’s who of your friends and family: your guest list. First and foremost, you want to ensure that your guest list reflects the atmosphere you want for your party. If you’re keeping it small, you may only want to invite your closest friends. However, if you’re throwing a big bash, grandma might not be on the invite list. Moreover, these little details can make a significant difference in the execution of your party.

Tip #6: Set your itinerary.

Now that you’ve got your guest list, you’ve got to have an itinerary that matches the vibe of your party and your guests. Even if your party is more of an open-house-style get-together, you’re going to want to have a plan for things like when the food and drink will be served, when any planned activities might happen (like singing Happy Birthday), and when the party will end. But either way, that’s something you’re going to want to have a plan for. 

Tip #7: Send out your invitations.

The timing of this tip is CRUCIAL. You want to send out invitations with enough time that people can plan for your party, without feeling like it’s a last-minute assignment. If you want to get super fun with it, we highly recommend using Bliss & Bone. Tip #8: Determine party favors.

HOT TIP: make your party even more memorable by tying your party favors to your theme.

Tip #9: Decorate at many heights.

We learned this tip from Lauryn’s friend Faith, who threw a killer 30th birthday bash at a VRBO in Beverly Hills. Where a lot of people may simply have a “Happy Birthday” banner or have a table where the presents go, you want to create an amazing visual effect at every level from the ceiling to the floor. 

How do you do this? We recommend lots and lots of balloons. They are super affordable and bring all the birthday vibes to the environment, whether you’ve got helium balloons placed strategically, a balloon arch for photos, or balloons scattered throughout the party on the floor, all 3 are good options.

HOT TIP: Splurge for the balloon weights and cut the strings at different lengths so it will look like a sea of balloons.

Tip #10: Photos, photos, photos.

Did you really have a bangin’ birthday bash if you didn’t get any photos of it? Some would say no. However, of course, you can have an amazing party without the perfect pics to post afterward. But chances are, you’re going to want to remember this party. Therefore, make it easy on your guests by getting a polaroid or two with lots of film. Additionally, set up a table with a guest book and fun markers so your guest can write in it. This way, guests can take a picture, tape it into the book, and write out a memory. And the perfect keepsake for you.

Or, you can also go the professional route and hire a photographer to staff a photo booth. It’s up to you, babes! Either way, the results will be picture-perfect.

10 Birthday Party Themes For Adults

Dinner Party

A dinner party is always a classy, yet simple option. Make food ahead of time, or cater food in. Then, sit down with your besties and enjoy.

Game Night

Everyone loves a party with an activity. It gives your more shy guests something to focus on until they can come out of their shell. Additionally, it’s just fun. You can pick your favorite games and get them prepped to play. From classic board games to interactive group activities, there’s something for everyone. Moreover, if you’re having a big party, use the games as centerpieces on different tables. It’s an easy icebreaker and a damn good time. Furthermore, you can even organize a tournament or set up stations with different games for variety. The possibilities are endless, and it’s a fantastic way to ensure everyone has a blast at your party.

Costume Party

While many adults still have a love for dressing up, we just don’t get to indulge in it as much anymore. However, you can change that with a costume party. Whether you keep it general for Halloween-like vibes or get specific for something more targeted, the choice is yours. Personally, we adore a masquerade theme. Bring on the ball gowns.

Cocktail Party

Have a birthday happy hour. Hire a bartender to serve up your favorite cocktails. Then, simply host the party.

Let me introduce you to something that every person who loves a vibe needs. A candle wick trimmer. This is so efficient & not only something to trim your candle wicks with, but it also looks so chic in your house. Use it as decor on your candle plates or on your mantle if you have one. I have a gold one sitting in front of my candles & I absolutely love it.

Highs & lows when it comes to decor is a must for me, especially when it comes to candles. Different heights & dimensions makes any room look good (my wedding was all about different candle heights & dimensions).

So in my house I have all my different sized candles on a white marble slab & then my candle wick trimmer laying by the candles. It looks really nice & very aesthetically pleasing. A natural bamboo candle plate is fun too.

How to Make Your Candles Last Longer

WHY YOU SHOULD TRIM YOUR CANDLES

♡ you’ll get a clean burn, meaning no smoke.

♡ the glass holders won’t get black soot at the top.

♡ your candles will last longer.

Sidenote: It’s important to trim those longer wicks before you light a candle when the wax is at room temperature, not after you blow out the flame when it’s burning hot.

You want the wick to be 1/8 of an inch at all times. You know when you burn a candle & the wick gets that big black bulb that creates a smokey flame? Well you want to cut that off.

The best thing about this little tool is for sure to extend the life of your candle. And it’s especially nice if you like to buy higher end candles. This way they won’t go to waste.

Why can’t you just use normal scissors? Because a candle wick trimmer is angled perfectly for trimming a wick. It’ll keep your candle looking so chic & beautiful without getting all smokey.

My grandma is the one who first introduced me to a candle wick trimmer. She always had one on hand & was very specific about trimming her candle wicks.

This is a quality tool that everyone in the universe needs. It’s a very cute housewarming gift that you could totally give with some Palo Santo & a nice candle, you can’t go wrong. If you’re a fan of cathedral candles or pillar candles, they can be difficult because they’re so tall & skinny so this is ideal for those.

A candle wick trimmer is just one of those things you never knew you needed until you have one. You’ll become hooked. The angle of it is perfect, whereas a normal pair of scissors are too straight.

5 WAYS TO PRESERVE YOUR CANDLES

♡ trim the wick every time

♡ keep the flame away from moving air (like an open window)

♡ let the melted wax go all the way across the top layer (to avoid uneven burning)

♡ use table salt to slow down the wax melting. An alternative is to put your candle in the freezer

♡ be sure to have a pool of wax on top of the candle before you extinguish the flame

& while we’re on the subject of candles, let’s talk about my favorite ones.

♡ Cire Trudon

When I went to Glossier in NYC, there was this smell throughout the entire building. I NEEDED to know what the smell was- it was sooooo good. I tracked down the girl at the front desk & she said it’s this special candle that everyone loves. Everyone asks what the smell is when they walk in. It was this Cire Trudon candle, almost burned down to its last little drop.

It’s described as a mint tea, gingery, peppery scent but seriously… it’s basil.

It’s a little expensive but makes a great gift. The scent is so beautiful- not too strong, not too sweet. It’s the most perfect smell and I swear everyone will like.

I highly recommend wrapping this up in a super cute way & giving it with a mini bottle of pink champagne. I think it’s such a chic gift.

♡ natural beeswax

Recently been hearing a lot about unscented beeswax candles. These are natural, non-toxic and actually eliminated odors from the air. I need a little more time with mine, but I’m so into this idea.

♡ Taja Collection

I’ve talked about these ones before, & how I like to get them personalized. The ones we had done for my sister-in-law’s baby shower were so cute. This is one of my favorite candle brands because of their customization. They’re out of control with how gnarly they customize. If you’re looking for a brand that really takes it to the next level, then this is the brand for you. I cannot recommend them enough when it comes to candle customization. They even did the party favors for Zaza’s pineapple soirée birthday. Their candle care set is so chic.

As I said, any of these scented candles with a candle wick trimmer & some Palo Santo would make a great housewarming gift. Be sure to get these things for yourself too- & if you wanna get extra like me, you can even get a candle snuffer too ( another gift from my grandma & something we’ll have to talk about in another post ).

Candle tools are kind of a fun thing that could be passed on to your daughter. I feel like it’s such a vintage thing that everyone needs.

Throw that orange pair of scissors away & grab your candle wick trimmer. You’re basically Suzy Fucking Homemaker. Would love to know some random accessory you have in your house that you didn’t know you needed until you got it.

The prettiest setting on the lake and you must order the Affogado al Caffe. There’s also an olive and salty nut situation too. So be sure to ask for that.

♡ The Grill

This bread is WORTH it so go for it. Warm and buttery. Yum. Also, this place has an incredible view.

♡ Una Finestra Sul Lago

The most amazing pizza, maybe the best ever. Staff is so nice and charismatic.

♡ La Terrazza

Order the Brunello or the lemony, dry white wine with cacio e pepe topped with caviar. The saffron and gold leaf risotto is so good too.

♡ Il Crotto Dei Platani

Get a glass of champagne the moment you sit down to enhance your entire experience.

♡ La Tirlindana

Kinda of a hole in the wall but incredible. Ordering the octopus and lemon ravioli is the only way to go here.

♡ Il Giardino in Cernobbio

The most adorable, chic little courtyard restaurant in a hotel.

♡ La Colombette

Mick Jagger’s favorite. In fact, it’s family owned and the truffle pasta and lamb chops are BEYOND.

Michael and I just got home from Cannes, France and it was such a fun trip, but my god was I happy to be home & see my kids. 3 days is good, 7 is too long (for me). There was some work, some play, and it was a really fun trip filled with lots of Campari sodas and la piscine de champagne.

For this trip, I packed some high end staples that I really think I’ll have forever, or at least a very long time. I was wanting a more elevated, classic look, opposed to trendy this year. Some of the items are totally an investment, but like I said I’m trying to go for more quality over quantity when it comes to my closet lately.

Let’s get right into my packing list, k.

We know Memorial Day is over a week away but we just want you to be all set up and the most prepared you can be.

Whether you’re off for a long weekend away, hitting up a BBQ with friends and family or staying poolside we wanted to give you all a roundup of our Memorial Day Necessities.

In this post we’re going to go over our favorite cocktails and mocktails, recipes that are perfect for a crowd, how to stay safe in the sun and beat the heat. Let’s get into it.

Memorial Day Essentials:

♡ Mocktails

+ raspberry pear spritzer

+ kombucha

+ Ollipop or Poppi (pour over ice with a suitable garnish and a fun straw for a vibe)

+ iced SporTEAwith a lemon wedge (more on why Lauryn loves it here)

+ Topo Chico with fresh squeezed lemon, lime or grapefruit juice

♡ Cocktails

+ skinny marg, with or without a jalepeño, half rim of Tajin

+ Spritz Society sparkling wine – perfect to take to a party (listen to the founder on The Skinny Confidential HIM & HER Show)

+ Dry Farm Wines (but only if you DON’T WANT A HANGOVER)

+ if you feel like showing off, invite some friends over and impress them with this cocktail smoking cloche

+ la piscine de Champagne, aka a huge wine glass with Champagne, but the trick is to keep adding ice so you stay hydrated. It’s THE drink in the South of France

+ peach habanero salsa with Siete chips

+ homemade sourdough bread bowl filled with spinach and artichoke dip

+ watermelon jerky
